PERCEPTION

. . . Something To Think About. . .

Washington, DC Metro Station on a cold January morning in 2007. The man with a violin played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time approx. 2 thousand people went through the station, most of them on their way to work. After 3 minutes a middle aged man noticed there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried to meet his schedule.

4 minutes later:

The violinist received his first dollar: a woman threw the money in the hat and, without stopping, continued to walk.

6 minutes:

A young man leaned against the wall to listen to him, then looked at his watch and started to walk again.

10 minutes:

A 3-year old boy stopped but his mother tugged him along hurriedly. The kid stopped to look at the violinist again, but the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children.. Every parent, without exception, forced their children to move on quickly..

45 minutes:

The musician played continuously. Only 6 people stopped and listened for a short while. About 20 gave money but continued to walk at their normal pace. The man collected a total of $32.

1 hour:

He finished playing and silence took over. No one noticed. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition.
No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the greatest musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, with a violin worth $3.5 million dollars. Two days before Joshua Bell sold out a theater in Boston where the seats averaged $100.
This is a true story. Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and people's priorities.

The questions raised:

*In a common place environment at an inappropriate hour, do we perceive beauty?
*Do we stop to appreciate it?
*Do we recognize talent in an unexpected context?

One possible conclusion reached from this experiment could be this:

If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world, playing some of the finest music ever written, with one of the most beautiful instruments ever made.

How many other things are we missing?

MY VIEW:
This is something I came across on Stumbleupon.com and it is truly amazing. It just proves to us how blinded we are by the world. We immediately assume that if you are playing in the subway station, you are no good, or we just throw money into the hat carelessly without stopping to listen. I get it, everyone is rushing to work or school in the morning, but just because we are in a rush does not mean we can't accept true beauty. We must stop and realize the beautiful things in this world, we must stop and listen to street performers of all types, we must embrace the music into our souls. Whether the music is being performed by a world-class jazz band in a concert hall or on the street at the side of the road, we should always listen to bit of the beauty before we rush to wherever we are trying to go. This article is truly an eyeopener to me, and really tells us a lot about human nature.

Friends with Kids was an incredibly entertaining, hilarious, and wonderful movie! This is definately the go-to movie for a movie night out with the girls! If you're bored and have nothing to do one day, hit the theatres and check out Friends With Kids for a bit of a laugh with your good ol' buddies. It is about two best friends, a guy and a girl, who are the only single individuals within their friend group. Everyone around them is getting married, having babies, and experiencing the problems of a mid-life crisis. Jules and Adam end up having a baby together as friends, and decide to skip all the problems that come with marriage. They date other people and see other friends. The Bridesmaids-like humour in this movie keeps you glued to your seat the entire time. It is a must-see for guys and girls alike, and I guarantee that this is a movie you will never forget. If you liked Bridesmaids, you would LOVE this! So check it out and send me your feedback!

NOTE: We wanted to buy popcorn but the movie already started, so I said that after 15 minutes I will go and buy food. Before I knew it, it was the end of the movie and I completely forgot about the popcorn.  A movie is GOOD if I, of all people, who love to eat, forgets about popcorn in a movie theatre. Silly, but fun fact!

Pippie. A Living Miracle.

Remember that little girl named Pippie? AKA Isabella Kruger? The one who got burned? And 80% of her skin fell off? And swellings grew to three times her size? And she was undergoing skin surgery? And I said that there would be more news to follow in the next three weeks? Well, looks like the surgery went well!

Anice Kruger, the mother of Pippie (Isabella Kruger) dressing Pippie and preparing her for the long-awaited release from hospial.to the rehabilitation center.

Pippie is on her road to recovery as she left the pediatric ICU of Garden City Hospital this morning and is on her way to the Netcare rehabilitation hospital in Auckland Park. Nurses lined the exit to the hospital and other patients clapped as she made her first trip outside in 7 months. Anice Kruger, her mother, embraced ICU nurse Simphiwe Mabaso in tears full of gratitude and joy. From the moment that Pippie stepped into the hospital with swellings three times her size, her face covered in black soot, and her skin looking like a leather shell to today is a miraculous improvement.

Despite the improvement, Pippie still has a long journey ahead of her and has to undergo severe exercises to bring her back to her “normal” state. Her joints would have to be stretched, she would have to gain muscle strength, learn to lift her head up, and learn to speak. This is an experimental therapy and the long-term effects remain undetermined. However, so far, the operation is seen as a major success and Pippie is one step closer to recovery. Her prayers are with me forever and always.
GOD BLESS HER.

Respect. An 18-Month Journey.

Zack Kimotho, who is a Kenyan, is traveling 4,000 kilometers from Nairobi to the nearest Spinal rehabilitation center, which is in South Africa, by wheelchair. He is wheeling himself halfway across Africa and is trying to raise 2.9 million dollars to build a rehabilitation center in Kenya. He said that the longest journey in his life, however, was the ride from the roadside where he had been shot during an attempted carjacking to a hospital in Nairobi. He wants to help people who are in a similar condition as he is and he believes that a rehabilitation center would help both the injured and their families cope with the special needs of a paraplegic’s lifestyle. According to the Kenyan government, there are more than 15,000 people who suffer spinal-cord injuries from accidents on the road annually. So far, he has raised 500,000 dollars and continues his 18-month journey to South Africa.

 My View:

What this guy is doing is incredible. It is truly amazing and inspiring. Traveling, BY WHEELCHAIR, from Kenya to South Africa is just unbelievable. And the fact that he is traveling all this way just to go to a spinal cord rehabilitation center is crazy. Kenya does not have one, let alone most countries in Africa, and he needs to travel all this way just for help. I really do pray that he raises the 2.9 million dollars that he needs. I hope that one day he builds a rehabilitation center that helps thousands of people throughout Africa. I will definitely donate and I hope you do too, for this is just too incredible for words!
